Yes, I can video chat all the way to Italy.
Jul 27th
How do I know, because I did it.
Yesterday I was IMed (text) from someone I never met before, but their english was not so good so it was very hard to understand them.
I tried to understand but the most I got was that I was talking to an Italian girl. After trying for few minutes and giving up I decided to see what I could find online about the username. Because people use the same user name on different accounts.
I found out the same name (an unusual name) was registered at another site in Italy, but it was a man not a woman.
OK, someone must be playing a trick on me.
Later I tried again to ask what they needed help with, but it was still just a hard as before. The person asked if I knew another person. I said no and they said they would ask later, I’m confused as well.
Later a different person (the one they asked me if I knew) started chatting with me. Their english was better but still not great and you have to remember that we are still just text messaging. With iChat on a Mac.
At this point he explains that he got my name from the dotmac website because my registration indicated that I had an iSight (firewire camera).
When I told him I knew what city he lived in he wanted to know how I knew. I sent him to the same site that I got the info from earlier.
This was indeed the person that I saw registered at the other site and it was his wife that tried to IM me.
OK, so now I’m text messaging with a very nice gentlemen in Italy. After a day of just simple instant messaging I told him I would try my iSight when I got home from work at 6pm. They are 6 hours ahead making it midnight there.
When I got home I hooked up my camera and clicked the the video chat button. And there they were, in full live color. I was video chatting with a very nice man in Italy and his wife.
The video connection was absolutely awesome, the video never broke up and I could see him as well as he could see me.
Not only was it cool to chat with someone that far away but he was very nice and we video chatted for about 20 minutes.
We both have an iSight camera and a 17″ PowerBook. I was using a wireless connection at my home.
Thank you Apple for making this possible for us, we really enjoyed it.
WYWO, Mother’s Day
May 8th
In the spirit of WYWO (While You Were Out), I attempt a makeover of our bedroom in one day. I did it by myself for my wife on Mother’s Day 2004.
Karen was gone for the day and I had 12 hours to remake the bedroom.
She was gone on Saturday visiting her mother which gave me the day before Mother’s Day to show her how much I appreciate and Love her.
I recorded key points throughout the makeover and will be putting together a video that I post online.
The new bedroom included a new ceiling fan, alarm clock, , I built a new head board that looks like a Torii and a bed frame that sets on the floor with side boards and two window valences and two shelves. Some staging was also done.
